Zed AI

Zed is a next-generation code editor built in Rust by the former creators of Atom (GitHub's editor). Its fundamental promise is performance: thanks to Rust and native GPU rendering, Zed maintains typing latency below 50 milliseconds, even on million-line codebases.

But Zed is not just a fast editor — it's a complete development environment with integrated AI. The AI Agent panel lets you chat with LLMs (Claude, Gemini, or local models via Ollama), ask them to modify code, explain functions, and generate tests. Edit predictions are intelligent suggestions that anticipate your modifications.

Real-time collaboration is Zed's other major strength. Like Google Docs but for code, multiple developers can work simultaneously on the same file with visible cursors, built-in voice chat, and one-click session sharing. This is true multiplayer pair programming.

Zed is open source (GPL for the editor, Apache 2 for the GPUI GPU framework), allowing security teams to audit, fork, and extend the code without legal friction. The privacy-first approach lets you choose between Zed-hosted models, your own API keys, or local models via Ollama — keeping everything on-premise if needed.

Platform support includes native macOS and Linux, with a private Windows beta and stable release planned. The built-in multi-language debugger supports Rust, Go, Python, C/C++, and JavaScript.
